What Can (and Can't) Go in a Roll-Off Dumpster in Florida

By Keith Meredith · June 9, 2026

Good news up front: most of what you're trying to get rid of can go straight in the can. There's just a short list of things we can't take — usually because the landfill won't take them either. Here's the whole deal, in plain English.

The green light: toss it right in

If it came out of a house, a remodel, a garage, or a yard, it’s almost certainly fair game:

✅ Goes right in
  • Furniture, mattresses & carpet
  • Drywall, lumber, flooring & trim
  • Roofing shingles (just tell us — they're heavy)
  • Cabinets, doors, fixtures & countertops
  • Yard waste, brush & branches
  • Household junk, boxes & general clutter
  • Most construction & remodel debris
🚫 Keep it out
  • Tires
  • Car & lithium batteries
  • Paint, stains & solvents (liquids)
  • Fuel, oil, propane tanks
  • Fridges, freezers & AC units (freon)
  • Chemicals & hazardous waste
  • Medical or biohazard waste

Why those few things are off-limits

It’s not us being picky — it’s the law and the landfill. Florida has rules about what can go into the regular waste stream, and most of the “keep it out” list either leaks, off-gasses, or catches fire:

  • Freon appliances (fridges, AC units) have to be drained and certified before disposal.
  • Tires and batteries are banned from Florida landfills and have their own recycling channels.
  • Liquids, paint, and chemicals can contaminate everything else and are a hazard for our crew.
The wet-paint trick Got leftover paint? Pop the lid, stir in some cat litter or a paint hardener, and let it dry out solid. Once it's fully dried, the empty hardened can is fine to toss. Liquid paint isn't — dried paint is.

So where does the banned stuff go?

You’re not stuck with it. Around Marion County, here’s the usual play:

  • Tires → most tire shops take them for a small fee when you buy new ones.
  • Batteries → auto-parts stores and scrap yards take car batteries (often for cash).
  • Paint & chemicals → the county’s household hazardous waste drop-off.
  • Appliances with freon → a scrap/recycler who can certify the freon, or ask us — sometimes we can point you to one.

When in doubt, just ask

Not sure about something? Text us a photo or give us a call before you toss it. It takes two seconds and it saves you a headache (and a possible extra fee) later. We'd always rather you ask.
